Venice Architecture Biennale 2027: Andres Lepik Joins the Curatorial Team for the German Pavilion

“CONVIVERE” aims to focus attention on the in-between spaces of residential life—on thresholds, stairwells, courtyards, terraces, and areas just outside the door. The central question is what contribution these often-overlooked spaces can make to encounters, community, and democratic coexistence. For the Biennale, the curatorial team is compiling spatial situations from residential buildings of different eras and various forms of housing from all over Germany. The focus is not on the buildings as a whole, but rather on specific spatial situations and transitions that facilitate social interaction.

Andres Lepik has been addressing societal and social issues related to the built environment for many years through his curatorial work. Since 2012, the art and architecture historian has served as professor for History of Architecture and Curatorial Practice, as well as director of the Architekturmuseums der TUM. Among the exhibitions he has curated are “AFRITECTURE. Building Social Change” (2013) and “Who’s Next? Homelessness, Architecture, and the City” (2022).

Architecture students from the TUM School of Engineering and Design (ED) will also contribute to the development of the exhibition materials: Documentation and visualizations are being prepared under the guidance of Prof. Benedikt Boucsein at the  Professorship of Urban Design, as well as at three other German universities. Participating institutions include RWTH Aachen University with Prof. Anne-Julchen Bernhardt, RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau with Prof. Oda Pälmke, and the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart with Prof. Tatsuya Kawahara.

In early 2027, the curatorial team will announce further details regarding the exhibition’s content.

The 20th Venice Architecture Biennale will take place from May 8 to November 21, 2027.
