Prof. Klaus Sedlbauer receives the Federal Cross of Merit for Sustainable Construction

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Klaus Sedlbauer, Chair of Building Physics at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for his outstanding contributions to science. The award was presented by Bavaria’s Minister of Construction and Transport, Christian Bernreiter, in the presence of State Parliament President Ilse Aigner in Munich.

For nearly forty years, Prof. Sedlbauer has been shaping the field of building physics through research, teaching, and practical application. After many years in various leadership roles at the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics, he took over the Chair of Building Physics at TUM in 2014. His research combines fundamental scientific questions with application-oriented solutions, particularly in the areas of sustainable and energy-efficient construction and life-cycle assessment. 

In addition, Sedlbauer is deeply involved in activities beyond the university: As a co-founder of the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB), a member of numerous national and international expert and standards-setting bodies, and an advisor to the Sustainable Building Commission of the Federal Environment Agency, he plays a key role in advancing sustainable standards in the construction industry.

With more than 500 scientific publications, several patents, and the supervision of numerous doctoral dissertations, Prof. Sedlbauer has made a lasting impact on science, business, and politics. His life’s work exemplifies engineering research that is not limited to theory but actively contributes to the transformation of the construction industry. The award of the Federal Cross of Merit recognizes this extraordinary commitment.
