Environmental Engineering B. Sc.
Human activity, be it the use of natural resources, the energy production, the building of settlements and infrastructure, or even daily life activities, are closely linked to the environment with numerous of mechanisms. On the other hand, natural phenomena can also pose risks to human activity and human life. Environmental Engineers develop and apply technologies for the prevention and mitigation of human impacts on the environment as well as the prevention of environmental hazards.
Your profile
Target group of this bachelor’s programme are school graduates with special inclination in natural science, engineering and technology. You should be interested in the development and use of technologies for the protection of water, soil and air as well as the sustainability of human activities such as the use of resources, energy production or construction.
What you´ll learn
This science oriented course for a Bachelor of Environmental Engineering aims to teach the basic specialized knowledge, methodical competencies and core skills required for under- graduate engineer professionals.
The foundation-oriented part of the degree consists of general modules from engineering and the natural sciences. These form the foundation of the education of an engineer in environmental engineering and are essential for understanding the subjects relevant to the profession.
This is expanded in the higher semesters, which are in the area of specialisation. These include overarching competences of environmental engineering as well as a targeted selection of subjects from the specialisation areas of environmental engineering relevant to the job profile. The mixture between engineering and natural science modules within the overarching fundamentals is retained in these semesters, whereby the content of these modules is more clearly linked to the job profile of environmental engineering.
The bachelor's degree programme in environmental engineering aims to equip students with the necessary competences of interdisciplinary engineers who have mastered the entire range of environmental engineering at a basic level and already show signs of specialisation.
The standard period of study for bachelor's degree programme in Environmental Engineering is six semesters. The study programme is divided mentally into two parts, each with a duration of three semesters. The transition between the two parts is not marked by a special examination. Rather, from a subject perspective, it is to be understood as a transition from the teaching of general basic competences to the basic modules of environmental engineering related to the profession.
The first three semesters of the bachelor’s programme consist of fundamentals in the fields of engineering and nature sciences. They are the foundation for an interdisciplinary engineering education related to the environment.
The final three semesters include cross cutting engineering competences and the basic modules of all possible specialisation fields of an environmental engineer:
- Water engineering: Hydrology, river engineering and river basin management, hydraulic engineering, management of water resources, water and wastewater treatment
- Transportation and Infrastructure: Spatial planning, city and transportation planning, traffic engineering and control, planning road and rail infrastructure
- Sustainability of the built environment: Ecological building, urban energy supply, sustainability of constructing materials and circular economy
Semesters 1-3 consist of general basic modules from the engineering sciences (approx. 2/3 of the modules) and the natural sciences (approx. 1/3 of the modules).
Semesters 4-6, which are in the area of specialisation, comprise overarching competences of environmental engineering as well as a targeted selection of subjects from the specialisation fields of environmental engineering relevant to the job description. The mixture between engineering and natural science modules within the overarching fundamentals is retained in these semesters, whereby the content of these modules is more clearly linked to the job profile of environmental engineering.
Emphasis is placed in semesters 4-6 in the areas of:
- Hydraulic engineering and water management
- Hydrology
- Urban water management
- Environmental geotechnics
- Hydrogeology
- Regional planning and land development
- Traffic Engineering
- Transport Planning
- Sustainable transport infrastructure planning
- Circular economy
- Sustainable construction materials and sustainable building
- Energy networks and energy supply
The group of specialisations relevant to the professional education is organised in so-called "profiles". Within the profiles, students must take elective modules worth at least 10 credits (two modules) in each of the following three profiles in the 4-5 semester:
- Water Resources
- Transport and Infrastructure
- Sustainability of the built environment
There are many ways to spend a shorter or longer period abroad during the Bachelor’s studies - for studying or an internship.
Apart from the well-known Erasmus + program, there are a number of other exchange opportunities available for TUM students. You can find detailed information in the TUM Wiki of your degree program under „Going on exchange - Wege ins Ausland“: Internationales / Exchanges – B.Sc. UI
A recognition of modules from a stay abroad can be achieved in two ways:
- Recognition as equivalent
- Free elective credits
The recognition as equivalent means that a module from the TUM-study programme is replaced by an identical module from the partner university. The decision upon this equivalence is taken by the professor responsible for the course at TUM based on the module descriptions. The forms for the recognition are provided by the examination officer.
A recognition in the free elective credits does not require a full equivalence of the modules. If they fit in the thematic scope of the study programme and the are not overlapping with already passed modules at TUM, they can be transferred directly. In this case please consult with the student advisor of the bachelor's programme.
You can find further information on the credit recognition process in the TUM Wiki of your degree program under „Going on exchange - Wege ins Ausland“: Internationales / Exchanges – B.Sc. UI
Students staying abroad with a leave of absence can bring in up to 20 credits per semester from the partner university without a cancellation of the leave of absence.
An internship abroad qualifies for the bachelor’s programme if it fulfils the requirements for the required internship. Please consult with the internship office in advance to get a confirmation.
Are you a student from a foreign university interested in a study or research stay at TUM? Please check the TUM Wiki under „Coming to TUM on exchange“: Internationales / Exchanges – B.Sc. UI
A six week practical training must be completed by all students. Proof of competion has to be submitted to the department one month before the end of the 2nd semester at the online portal of the Internship Office the very latest. Documents sent by mail or email cannot be processed.
Due to the restrictions caused by the spread of the corona virus, different regulations and deadlines for the internship may apply. For questions, please contact the internship office directly.
The online application is done via TUMonline.
This degree program is free of admission. This means that there is no selection procedure. You will receive an acceptance once the online application with all required documents has been submitted by the deadline and your documents have been reviewed.
