Awards

Every year, the TUM School of Engineering and Design awards prizes for the best scientific work in all disciplines. Outstanding achievements in undergraduate studies are promoted and awarded just as much as excellent final theses or special doctorates. In addition to scientific expertise, social significance of the research contributions also count.

The funding for these prizes and awards comes from both foundations and industry.

Who?
The University Award of the Bayerischen Bauindustrieverbandes at TUM is given annually to the best Master's, Bachelor's or Doctoral theses of the TUM School of Engineering and Design.

What?

  • Building Information Modeling
  • Interface of digital methods of the built environment (AI, point clouds, simulations, etc.)
  • Automation of construction processes

How much?
The award is sponsored by the Bayerischer Bauindustrieverband e.V. and endowed with 3,500 euros.

The Daimler und Benz Stiftung (Daimler & Benz Foundation) grants this award in recognition of excellent achievements by female graduates in the engineering sciences and as a way to motivate female students to strive for a doctorate in engineering. The prize is awarded yearly and is endowed with 10,000 euros. more

Who?
The CEE Department Price is awarded annually for outstanding theses in the Professional Profiles Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Geo Engineering. With this award, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the TUM School of Engineering and Design recognises outstanding scientific achievements.

What?
The CEE Department Price recognises outstanding results of a bachelor's thesis, master's thesis and dissertation. The following criteria are used for evaluation:

  • Outstanding scientific achievement (national and international) at the respective final level of the thesis (bachelor thesis, master thesis, dissertation).
  • Sustainable use of our planet
  • Social responsibility and promotion of the common good through technical progress and innovation
  • Topicality and practicability

How much?
Three price winners will be awarded 1,000 euros each.

When?
Application deadline: 30 May

How?
Applications can be submitted by recommendation of a professor or research assistant. The following must be submitted:

  • PDF file of the thesis including abstract
  • Letter of recommendation and/or expert opinion including grade and highlighting of the special curriculum vitae (max. 2 pages, tabular)
  • Short abstract (max. 1,000 characters), related to the criteria of the call for applications
  • Exclusion criteria and requirements: Multiple applications must be indicated
  • Degree can be assigned to one of the three Professional Profiles mentioned above, thesis must not be older than one year (from submission deadline 30 May)

Where?
The award ceremony will take place within the framework of the CEE´s Graduate Ceremony.

Who?
The award is given yearly to student theses by female students of the Subject area of Architecture that are distinguished by an innovative and interdisciplinary approach to the assignment to be worked on.

What?
The work must generate synergies from the knowledge of different disciplines beyond the actual task. The award focuses in particular on socially relevant questions. Results from design work as well as theoretical work from supplementary/specialised subjects can be submitted.

How much?
The patroness Prof. Christiane Thalgott, former city planning councillor of Munich and honorary professor for "Strategy and Implementation in Urban Planning" at the Department of Architecture at the Technical University of Munich, will present the Women's Representative Award in the amount of 500 euros.

When?

  • One A3 page as an overview (PDF) with a short summary of the task as well as a short description of the project including the interdisciplinary approach of the socially relevant topics addressed in the work
  • Original work in PDF format (reduced file size)

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Biomedizinische Technik (German Society for Biomedical Engineering, or DGBMT; part of the Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies (VDE)) and the Klee Family Foundation present an annual award for scientific work in the following areas of focus:

  • Biomedical technology as an interdisciplinary subject
  • Engineering-based solutions to current clinical problems
  • Contributions to diagnosis or treatment from the natural sciences

Who?
The Dr. Marschall Foundation aims to promote science and research. The foundation's purpose is realised in particular through the awarding and financial support of qualified young scientists at the TUM Department of Architecture.

What?
The funding aims to qualitatively strengthen ongoing doctorates as well as qualification projects in research and development, to support completion, and to promote visibility in the respective community (process funding).

  • The funding can be used, among other things, for the organisation of junior researcher conferences, research trips, material costs, expenses in connection with publications. No general living expenses are funded.
  • Doctoral students and research assistants who are already in an ongoing qualification process are eligible to apply.
  • Initial project-related proof of performance must be available at the time of application.
  • The work should take aesthetic concerns into account in the sense of the founder.
  • The following documents are expected: curriculum vitae / project exposé / proof of performance / time and budget plan. Initiative applications are possible.

In addition to the sponsorship, the Dr. Marschall Prize is awarded once a year for an outstanding dissertation/research work completed in the Department of Architecture. The recipient of the Dr. Marschall Prize is determined by the Foundation's Board of Directors.

How much?
The funding amounts to up to 5,000 euros per project.

When?
Board meetings are usually held in spring and autumn each year. Applications can be submitted by e-mail at any time.

The Tyczka Energie Stiftung (Tyczka Energy Foundation) grants the Dr. Tyczka Energy Award in cooperation with TUM and Hochschule Zittau/Görlitz in the categories:

  • Energy: for work on concepts for saving energy based on practical applications or those that have already been implemented
  • Industrial gases: for work dealing with innovative applications of technical gases

The award is presented for dissertations and theses from bachelor’s or master’s students which have developed ideas for environmentally friendly, decentralized energy generation, supply and application or innovative concepts for industrial gases. more

The Franz Berberich Award is sponsored by the Franz Berberich Foundation of the Technical University of Munich. The foundation serves to promote science and research at TUM, primarily at the Department of Architecture. The Franz Berberich Foundation was established in 1992. 

What?
With the Franz Berberich Award, the Department of Architecture annually promotes an outstanding result with project character, in the area of research & development or in the field of young academics (academic staff and students).

How much?
The award money amounts to at least 1,000 euros.

The Hans Döllgast Award of the Technical University of Munich is presented by the Bund der Freunde of the TUM.

What?
The award is presented annually for the best Master's thesis at the TUM Department of Architecture.

Who?
The Bernhard Borst Foundation awards the Senator Bernhard Borst Prize of the Technical University of Munich to architecture students or young graduates at TUM.

What?
The Senator Bernhard Borst Prize has the following expectations of its laureates:

  •     max. 1,920 Euro gross income/month
  •     German nationality
  •     worthy work results and extraordinary willingness to perform
  •     training in the crafts sector

How much?
The prize is endowed with 3,600 euros and is divisible.

Submit a form-free PDF with a presentation of your own portfolio, the name of the recommending professorship/scientific staff member, a completed self-disclosure, vita and contact data by June 15. The SSF Ingenieure Award is presented by the Bund der Freunde der TUM e.V. on the recommendation of the TUM School of Engineering and Design.

What?
Awards are given for an outstanding bachelor's thesis in the fields of solid construction, metal construction and timber construction.

How much?
The award money of 1,500 € is sponsored by SSF Ingenieure AG.

When?

Nominations are made by professors and research assistants of the TUM School of Engineering and Design (CEE) via the ED Portal.

Where?
The award ceremony will take place during the CEE´s Graduation Ceremony.

Who?
The aim of the Stiftung Maurer Söhne Award is to reward outstanding bachelor's and master's theses as well as doctoral dissertations in the field of engineering dynamics.

What?
Based on the purpose of the foundation, which is the non-profit promotion of research and science, in particular basic research in the field of dynamics in the area of structural engineering, the award is intended for theses that deal with basic research in the field of structural dynamics. Although a clear reference to application or practice in the sense of problem-oriented basic research is desirable, the focus should be on dealing with elementary issues when selecting the thesis.

How much?
The award is endowed with 2,000 euors and is presented by the Bund der Freunde der TUM e.V. on the recommendation of the TUM School of Engineering and Design. The award money is provided by the Maurer Söhne Foundation.

The Vodafone-Stiftung supports scientific advancement in mobile communication by giving out innovation and support awards every year:

  • The innovation award, endowed with 12,000 euros, recognizes outstanding work on the subject of the development of mobile and landline communications.
  • The 2 support awards, endowed with 5,000 euros, are given in recognition of outstanding dissertations in the fields of natural sciences, engineering, the market, customer focus and applications.

The Willy Hager Award is given in recognition of scientists’ outstanding work in the field of process engineering for industrial water or wastewater treatment. Works submitted for consideration should generally focus on the issue from a process engineering standpoint. more
