Campus Development
TUM will be implementing important construction projects over the next few years. In particular, the expansion of the campus for the Department of Aerospace and Geodesy will change the appearance of the TUM School of Engineering and Design and the communities of Taufkirchen and Ottobrunn.
Since its launch in 2018, the Department of Aerospace and Geodesy has grown rapidly and established itself as a key player in the research landscape. The next major development step is currently underway: new buildings for teaching and research are being constructed on a 7.5-hectares site. The procurement procedure will begin in 2026, and construction is scheduled to start in 2027.
Beyond boundaries
The year 2035 will mark the final major expansion phase for the Department of Aerospace and Geodesy. On the way to around 50 professorships, a permanent university campus with state-of-the-art research infrastructure, new industrial partnerships and expanded teaching opportunities will be created in Ottobrunn/Taufkirchen. At the same time, the department is focusing on an interdisciplinary and internationally networked approach - with new research initiatives on sustainable aviation, planetary exploration and AI-controlled geodesy.
Investments in state-of-the-art laboratories, flight test centers and high-performance computers create an innovative environment that brings together students, researchers and top experts from all over the world. The TUM Campus Ottobrunn/Taufkirchen will become the center of an innovative and interdisciplinary ecosystem that makes it possible to think and act beyond borders.
Current information about the Ottobrunn/Taufkirchen campus
Since the 2025/26 winter semester, courses for bachelor´s students in aerospace have been held in modular buildings at the Taufkirchen/Ottobrunn campus. The new infrastructure will relieve pressure on the Garching and Munich campuses and promote an integrated academic environment for aerospace and geodesy. Eleven lecture halls equipped with state-of-the-art media technology, seminar rooms, student workplaces and space for the student council are available to ensure excellent teaching.
Where can I find study spots?
In the module building study tables will be set up in the main hall of the campus. There will also be additional seating in the multifunctional room. Lecture halls may also be used for studying when unoccupied.
50 seats in group study rooms and 70 seats in the silent rooms for individual work will be made available in the department building, Lise-Meitner-Straße 8 (building 9379).
Can students stay in the buildings after lectures for self-study?
Yes, this will be possible during regular opening hours. There are currently no plans for 24-hour access to the buildings.
Will there be space for student clubs?
There will be space available for student clubs. The decision to move is up to the student clubs.

You can find further connections on the map below and on the MVV website.
When do shuttle buses run between Campus Garching and Ottobrunn/Taufkirchen?
The shuttles are primarily relevant for Aerospace Master's students and Bachelor's students in higher semesters. The departure times are aligned with elective courses to facilitate attending classes on both campuses on the same day. TUM evaluates the demand and usage of the buses and will adjust the schedule if necessary.
Departure times:
- Monday, 12:10 PM: Garching → Ottobrunn/Taufkirchen
- Wednesday, 1:10 PM: Ottobrunn/Taufkirchen → Garching
- Thursday, 11:30 AM: Ottobrunn/Taufkirchen → Garching
- Thursday, 1:15 PM: Garching → Ottobrunn/Taufkirchen
Bus stops:
- Taufkirchen: Willy-Messerschmitt-Str. 11, 82024 Taufkirchen
- Garching: Bus stop at the Garching-Forschungszentrum U-Bahn station
How many days a week are lectures held at Taufkirchen/Ottobrunn campus and at Garching campus?
During the first four semesters, one day per week will be a designated Garching day. All remaining mandatory courses (by non-ASG staff) will be clustered on this day. Commuting between campuses Garching and Ottobrunn/Taufkirchen is not required on these days. All other days, lectures are held in Taufkirchen/Ottobrunn.
During the semesters five and six, engineering electives have been rearranged to minimize commuting. Commuting windows were considered.
Updated timetables for winter term 2025/26 will be uploaded in due time: https://collab.dvb.bayern/x/J9dfB.
Will courses be streamed online?
This depends on the professor who offers the courses.
When will the Master Aerospace move to Taufkirchen/Ottobrunn? How will the overlapping joint lectures with Mechanical Engineering be handled?
There is no fixed date for when the Master will move (not expected within the next 2 to 3 semesters). We are currently investigating the timetables to decide how the move could take place.
Will there be student residences in Taufkirchen/Ottobrunn?
TUM has no mandate to build student residences but is already pointing out the need to create student housing in discussions with political decision-makers.
Will there be additional facilities such as sports grounds, areas for students to hang out or pubs?
Discussions with students and the student council will follow to assess needs.
